For the past two months a slew of fetes have entertained crowds of revelers as this country prepares for Carnival celebrations next week. In the crowd at several of these fetes teenagers are partying just as hard as the adults. Some with permission from their parents and others without.

Keisha David wanted to go to Licensing but knew she would not get her mother's approval. So instead of staying home and playing Farmville the 15-year-old decided she would not be left out. When her mother fell asleep, Keisha snuck out the house.

"I really wanted to go ... my sister and them could go because they have age but my mom did not want me to go because I underage," she said.

It was the first time she ever snuck out to go to a fete ... and it worked.

When she returned home in the wee hours of the morning, after dancing the night away, she quietly slipped back inside.

"My mother was still sleeping when I reached home. I called my brother on his cellphone and asked him to open the door for me."

Her mother still does not know she went to the fete.

Keisha knows she put herself at risk by attending the party without her mother's permission but believes her disobedience was worth it.

"I am a girl just like to have fun and enjoy myself," she said.

Unlike Keisha many of the teens The Student Press spoke to recently do not have to go behind their parent's back to party. There is no need to create elaborate stories about fake sleep overs and all-night study sessions.

When Jenille Trudge, 16, wants to go to a fete she spends more time thinking about what she will wear than her parents. She does not need their permission to party.

"I don't consider it a privilege, for me going to a fete is normal," the Morvant Laventille Secondary girl said.

Long gone are the days when Crony De Silva needed to ask his parents to go to a fete. He has already been to WASA and will be at tomorrow's Soca Monarch Finals.

The fifth-former said he has been partying without restrictions for the past two years. He was the only student who admitted he drank alcohol at these fetes.

"I mostly buy Stag," he said.

For some teens, getting to fete is as simple as tagging along with an adult.

Britney Charlerie, a second-former from Servol in Arima, said despite her age she is allowed to fete but must be accompanied by a trusted adult or relatives. The 14-year-old was free to palance at WASA's fete because members of her family were also there.

"I am not allowed to go by myself," Britney said.

Shaquille Hall of Arima Central Secondary said going to fetes is actually quite normal for him so the question of getting permission does not arise. He said he went to the Soca Monarch semi-finals with his aunt.

"It's normal for me to fete. I am a Trinidadian and this is my culture," the 17-year-old said.
