Hula, hula, hula, hula hoop boy, these guys from 'Puna Sec' demonstrate their skills with the hoop.

SO WITH mid-term exams out of the way, the students of Tunapuna Secondary took time out for their fun and family day event hosted at the school's recreation grounds yesterday.

Under the searing heat they ran, skipped, jumped, cheered on their respective teams and danced to music blasting from surrounding speakers outside the school. Parents too were seen enjoying the day's activities.

Today, the last day of school before the Easter break, they will return to classes  to collect their report books. But yesterday report cards were the last thing on the student's minds of as they enjoyed a much needed break.

Teacher Ruth Bajnauth, said the school was forced to "scale back on some of the sporting activities" this year because the school's grounds was not in pristine condition. This forced them to cancel their annual march-past and track-and-field events.

Despite these limitations, she said the school's sporting committee was able to organize a number of other novelty activities, including sack, lime and spoon and wheel barrow races, which students thoroughly enjoyed.

Those who did not participate in the races sat on the sidelines cheering on the members of their respective teams. The school's four competing "houses" were  - Bovell (blue) , Bravo (Lime Green), Latapy (Red) and Thompson (purple).

Alexandria Lopez, 16, Vice President of the school's Student Council hailed the event, a success.

Lopez, in an interview with The Student Press, said the school's sporting committee organized the fun-day, under the theme "Uniting in the name of fun" while the Council helped rally the students together.

The Council's president, Micah Aguillera 16, said sports has been instrumental in keeping  the student body active and out of trouble.

Lopez and Anguillera are lobbying school authorities to introduce additional games, like volleyball and hockey as part of the school's physical education sessions.

They said the Council has placed an emphasis on sports because they believe it will help students build positive relationships with each other.

Anguillera, who has been the president of the Council for the past two years, will pass the baton on to Lopez soon as he is scheduled to write Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exams in May.

He said he has encountered many challenges as president, but was able to achieve some goals. One of his most significant achievements has been raising enough funds to organize the school's first Carnival Fiesta which he believes encouraged camaraderie among students.

He believes he will be leaving the Council in good hands.

Lopez said she will be ready to take the helm when the time comes and will continue to provide leadership in the interest of the students.
