The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has announced a slight decline in overall performance at this year’s CSEC examinations. In a statement released yesterday, CXC noted that 66 percent of the entries region-wide achieved passing grades, compared to 69 percent last year – a drop of 3 percent.

Of the 21 subjects which saw decreased passing percentages, Integrated Science, Chemistry and Mathematics showed the highest rates of decline. This year, only 73 percent of the entries in Integrated Science achieved Grades I-III, compared to 85 percent last year.

Math and Chemistry followed close behind, with decreases of 9 and 7 percent, respectively. Performance in Human and Social Biology also declined, this time by 5 percent.

Biology and Physics showed similar results, with 73 percent of the entries passing, compared to 75 percent last year.

English B results, despite a decline from 76 percent to 71 percent over the past two years, were deemed satisfactory by the Council.

On the other hand, 10 subjects saw improved performances by candidates. These included: English A, with an increase of 6 percent; Caribbean History – 9 percent; Economics – 8 percent; Music – 13 percent; Principles of Accounts – 2 percent; and Spanish – 3 percent.

The best overall performance was in Physical Education and Sports, with 97 percent of the entries passing.

Of the 34 subjects offered this year, 10 saw an improvement in performance, while 21 witnessed a decline and three remained the same as in the previous year.
