For the fourth consecutive year, the overall performance on the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exam (CAPE) has remained unchanged.

According to a recent release from the Caribbean Examinations Council, 89 percent of the entries in the May/June 2011 sitting of CAPE obtained Grades I-V, the same percentage that achieved similar results in 2008 and subsequent years.

The release further stated that of CAPE's 44 units, 21 saw a decline in performance, while 18 showed improvement and five remained the same.

Of the subjects which showed improved performance, Electrical and Electronic Technology showed the most significant increase in acceptable grades.

This year, 80 percent of the entries for Unit 2 obtained Grades I-V, compared to 51 percent last year. In Unit 1, there was an increase of 24 percent, with 66 percent of entries receiving acceptable grades, compared to 42 percent last year.

Information Technology and Computer Science also topped the list of subjects that saw improved performance. Information Technology Unit 1 saw one of the largest performance increases, with 89 percent of entries achieving acceptable grades, compared to 73 percent last year.

Unit 2 saw a 2 percent improvement over last year's performance. In Computer Science Unit 1, there was a 10 percent increase in the percentage of entries achieving Grades I-V.

All four units of Mathematics saw an increase in the percentage of passes obtained. Performance in Applied Mathematics Unit 1 improved by 6 percent, and Unit 2 saw an improvement of 5 percent.

Performance in Biology and Physics also improved, with Biology Unit 2 and Physics Unit 1 showing slight increases in acceptable grades.

Both units of Chemistry, however, saw a slight decline in performance. The number of entries that achieved acceptable grades in Chemistry Unit 1 dropped by 4 percent, while the rate of those in Unit 2 fell from 92 to 90 percent.

The Business units had mixed performance. Both Management of Business units saw an improvement of 2 percent over last year's results, while Accounting Unit 1 remained relatively steady. Performance in Accounting Unit 2, however, fell by 4 percent.

Performance in Economics remained steady, with a slight improvement of 1 percent in Unit 1 and no change from last year's 86 percent of acceptable grades in Unit 2.
