BREAKING NEWS— A sex video in which two young males appear to be wearing the uniform of Fatima College, is now making the rounds on Facebook and so popular is the 13-minute video clip that several other facebook pages bashing the school and its students were racking up hundreds of members up to late Saturday (today) evening.

A short while ago a copy of the video was obtained by The Student Press, clearly showing two young males, possibly students, engaging in oral sex, with a third person recording the video. The boys in the video appear young and may possibly be in Form 2 or 3.

It is unclear where the video was shot or by whom, but based on background noise and objects such as chairs and fixtures which appear in parts of the video, there is reason to believe the video was made at a school.

Several students have responded by posting blatant and often obscene comments on the facebook groups, most of them decrying the sexual acts.

This is just the latest in a series of sometimes raunchy videos depicting students engaging in sexual acts which are posted to the popular social networking site. A few months ago, another video showed two girls kissing mouth to mouth and wearing the uniform of El Dorado East Secondary.

Add to this a horrifying number of videos of students fighting in and out of school which have also been posted on Facebook.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a teacher at a secondary school in Port-of-Spain who saw the sex clip,  linked the video to the recent debate surrounding the establishment of same-sex schools:

"It is true — very true — that same-sex schools have problems of their own, problems of a different nature. We may hence create more problems than we can handle with the mass creation of more of such schools. We must not be fooled into thinking all is well ... not at all."

The latest sex video is also raising fears among parents even about the safety of Facebook for their children.

Neither Elton Wickam, Communications Manager at the Ministry of Education nor Rory Subiah his assistant could be reached for a comment on the matter and calls to the mobile phone of Steve Williams, head of the ministry's Student Support Division also went unanswered.

Wow isn't that suprising...NOT
written by Hyperactiv , April 25, 2010

Everyone too busy or distracted by the fights and sex scandals of heterosexuals that surface in mixed schools (not saying that they aren't important as well) but they always over looked) but they assume that homosexuality and lesbianism would not occur that "all is well" , well guess what? its not and it is now splashed all over media so that viewers can see, rate and comment. They took so long to act upon it that it just had blown out of proportion and i hope this would be the start of fixing the issue that are left off as "jokes" or "minor" matters

Everyone needs to stop this
written by A.Charles , April 25, 2010

Wow.....i mean....it was idiotic that the action was actually filmed in the FIRST place...and worst that they were in their uniforms but why are people verbally attacking them. And the school....as if all the guys from fatima are like that.

Come on, there are obviously known homosexuals in Trinidad & Tobago....duh. So stop bashing them because their lifestyle is different from yours....they are still human beings.

I honestly feel bad for the guys, especially the one that got blasted with his full name tagged on the video. That was uncalled for...his whole life is messed up now.

Correction
written by mak , April 25, 2010

@ nak nak...It occurs in ALL schools not just same-sex institutions. Just because it hasn't been videotaped and publicized like this latest debacle doesn't mean it is absent.

No....

But......these guys weren't thinking at ALL.

Repeat after me, TAKING NAKED PICS ARE BAD.

SENDING NAKED PICS OVER THE NET IS BAD.

VIDEO-TAPPING SEXUAL ACTIVITY (in your uniform)IS WORSE!!!

This is stupid...
written by Celly , April 25, 2010

The fact remains that it is not the school that your child has been sent too that determines his sexual orientation so this should not affect the decision to change the mixed schools to same sex schools...I went to all girl schools ALL my life from Primary to secondary and I love boys and have NO desire to engage in sex with a FEMALE...NONE...however I value the education that I recieved at the all girl institution that I may not have had at a mixed institution...It does not matter whether you send your child to a mixed school or a single sex school if he likes boys...He LIKES boys...full stop...You cannot deny that single sex schools do have higher success rates...so lets weigh the should we sacrifice higher success rates because of two stupid little boys whom are probably in the minority...If the ministry were to rethink their move because of this incident they would be very foolish!!! However this is scary because it seems like ur children are not safe anywhere...I have a little brother and I fear for him and even or th lives of these boys this must be addressed...This should not be swept under the carpet this is news and election time seems like the perfect time to address these issues!!!!

how could teens be so disgusting??!!

I am appalled yes but...
written by Fei Wiltshire-Fudge , April 25, 2010

... I go to a same sex school, and just the other day I was accused of kissing a girl when we were alone in the Language Lab. Of course I wasn't but to the girls who were looking in, it definitely looked that way. In a way it was partly my fault because i had known for a while that she was bisexual and she told me herself that she had a perversed attraction to me but i didn't exactly stop being friends with her so when she came on to me that day I didnt push her away hard enuff because part of me wanted to know what it felt like and then the majority in me was too shocked because i didnt think she would b so daring as to come unto me...and yes i realize i have just confessed but what the heck, i just got to move on and i really feel sorry for these guys because i was once in their position.

WHOA!
written by D.S , April 25, 2010

That is just sad.
I mean honestly I see no problem with being gay, lesbian, confused, bi curious or anything of the sort but something I learned, keep things like that private in a world where things are not accepted with ease.
What you do with another person sexually should be kept behind closed doors in the privacy of your life and that persons life. Not advertised all over the world.
This is something I've learnt from making my own mistakes in life and that's why I can say it.
Pictures, videos anything in between are not needed.
Nothing is private in the world you can take things in the heat of the moment, in other words as a joke but other people would never understand. If someone can hack your personal computer and get your data then nothing is safe which is why the easiest thing to do is to not do it at all.
I have NOTHING against gay people and I pity all gay people right now BECAUSE of this scandal.

But while we on this with schools. What about student teacher relationships? I know it's a touchy topic but something was brought to my attention recently and it is sad to know how low some students would go or how low teachers would go.

Honestly this country is getting out of control where sex is concerened.

written by cmugrad , April 25, 2010

Sorry, but to even link the prevalence of homosexuality to attending a single-sex school is unfounded and shows a real lack of thought. One has nothing to do with the other. I mean, take a few seconds and think about it. If you are a homosexual teen who goes to a co-ed school, aren't there still students of the same sex at a mixed school with whom you could pursue relationships? So...what really is the link between homosexuality and single-sex schools? There are homosexual adolescents in every school.
Furthermore as for those who think that it should be kept private, there are few things on TV and in movies that are not sexual in nature. There is a double standard. Everything we are exposed to in the media is sexual, yet we expect our teens not to be sexual or capture their sexuality on film?

Disgusting
written by De borse , April 25, 2010

This is reprehensible and gives boys' schools a worse name than they already had. Homosexuality is both illegal and immoral and thus every consequence is deserved. However, I maintain violence should not be advocated. As a student of a boys' school, I realise that the social problem in Trinidad and Tobago is growing worse.

Not surprising
written by Straight up girly , April 25, 2010

It has been hidden by same sex schools for many years, i went to a same sex(all girls) so called prestige school, and it was prevalent for the five years i attended, however it was never made an issue, it instead began a culture which i had to stay far away from(because of my own beliefs and values).... It's not surprising now to see the unfortunate results of no action taken earlier by teachers or students.... Some little idiots who obviously have absolutely no sense of shame, and no restriction took it upon themselves to record this video and post on the Makko-book.... Now lets all stand back and watch the blame game begin.... i blame the school's authority, and the stupid students, because to me, they are all at fault.... the school for not taking the necessary precautions like monitoring cell phones(aren't camera phones banned in schools?) and the students for being so stupid....

did these %^&* not learn anything from the whole anya incident?? taping sexual acts is nothing less than complete and absolute idiocy!

Its also retarded that some would say same-sex skools "make" ppl homosexual. Schools are barely even able to control our behaviour and ability to learn, so i refuse to believe that any school environment can make sum1 gay. Its quite absurd to think every same-sex school student is homosexual, because honestly, anyone could go to one of those skools. I actually know quite a few gay ppl that came out of co-ed skools, kinda like those eldo girls from that vid.

i really dont care what these kids are allowed to do in skool these days skool administration cannot control what they do or when they do it.

i also dont care about any backlash those kids would receive. they deserve everything they get.

i only feel sorry for the distraught parents of these students and the other students of that skool who now have less pride in their uniform because of these idiots and the other fools that would be only to eager to paint them with the same brush

keep in mind...
written by Leann Gill , April 25, 2010

lets try to remember that the issue here is not homosexuality, it is however, students engaging in sexual acts in uniform and on school compound as well as distributing child pornograghy. These boys are obviously disturbed and instead of bashing them with terms like "faggot," as a society we should do what we can to help the boys and stop the distribution of the video and report groups on facebook which are offensive to Fatima and their students.

written by Saud , April 25, 2010

Being gay has nothing to do with attending a same-sex school. Do you realize that all the prestige schools are same-sex? ALL! They aren't known for fights with other schools or having babies at 16, they're known for scholarships and success. Should they be victimized because they excelled at school? So what you're surrounded by the same sex and that increases your chances of being gay? That literally makes no sense! Videos are being made weekly from schools in the east and i'm telling you is have men in Arima selling them as DVDs! But thas not a big scene right? These fellas gay so let's stone them and beat them. Why does it bother you if someone else is gay? Fatima men shouldn't be ashamed because in my eyes and the eyes of many others, they're still a prestigious school with just about the best football team and swimming team in the country.

people be sensitive
written by K-Star , April 25, 2010

reading some of the comments on this... this act between both boys are truly despicable, however it is NOT because they go to the same sex school... as one person commented... it happens in ALL schools... not to bash co-ed schools but some of these same sex schools are the best in the country and because these boys did an act that would taint and tarnish their school's reputation, it does not mean that putting more same sex schools would result in the very same acts as these... what these boys need right now is prayer that their future isn't as horrible as we make it out to be... do you not know that your words can literally kill these boys?? listen, if you CANNOT say it to their face in person, then it is best you dont say it at all... people feel and think that they are the angels in our country when in reality they did acts probably worse than those boys except they werent as stupid as those boys to tape it. what i am trying to get to is that having same sex school has its disadvantages just as its advantages... those who dwell on the evils of this world and feed on it for their entertainment and enjoyment isnt any different from those committing the evil. all I can do is pray for them and their parents...

facts
written by A FATIMA STUDENT , April 25, 2010

I saw the video.. and i think Kerry Peters should learn how to write a better article. There is no proof that there was a third party recording, in fact camera angles indicate that the second party was also the recorder. if u disagree then the word used is 'appeared' to have a third party. Also careful examination of the video shows that it was shot in a bathroom, not on a chair. well done realising it was shot in school though. Now i am not even ashamed of sayin that i am a fatima student, and hence the reason why i think details should be important as it is such a sensitive issue. What i really would like to bring across to the public however, is that the act of two young fatima boys doesnt represent the entire student body of fatima. Regardless, this video will result in certain persons attempting to bring down the name of Fatima College which will take a lot more than a mere video to bring down. We are still a top of the line school, easily one of the best in the country producing all round, intelligent individuals. What I am saying is that no matter what one or two students may do while representing Fatima, it should never be looked upon as something the entire school engages in. Now and even after this has blown over, Fatima will still remain a high class institution and i dare you to find anyone who would disagree. Anyone sensible.

sexual experimentation is normal. Even if these boys are gay thats not a problem. They are gay because they were born like that, not because they attend a same sex school.

The ignorance of that statement by that teacher from Port of Spain is disgusting. He should be fired for such stupidity.

These young men need healing, not hate
written by Colin , April 25, 2010

I'm not sure why having gay students or students who have sex in school is such a stain on Fatima's reputation. It's probably still the school I would send my boys to; but I'll have to wait and see how it treats these two young men who made a terrible mistake, and whether it allows them to redeem their lives.

We need to be careful not to engage in another Dana Alleyne feeding frenzy of self-righteousness and make these young men's lives a further hell than they've already made it for themselves. Prestige school students have been having sex in school since before I attended one in the 1970s. We just didn't have the ability to film it.

Mind you, having sex in school, filming it, and doing so in uniform are all not really smart things or healthy things for young people's sexual and personal development. And because it's gay sex, the graphic images elicit an exponentially higher level of stigma than a heterosexual video would.

How do we help these young men take back their lives, heal, learn lessons, grow through whatever immaturity or neediness led to such a stupid act? Grow up to be self-respecting, self-assured and sexually healthy gay men, as it seems they are? What do they need from our Ministry of Education? from Fatima? At a minimum, they need us to take all the videos and links down, erase them from our hard drives. They need us to reexamine why we are spending so much time and energy on destroying two teenagers instead of doing something more productive for young people.

This is tougher for no one than them, but it's tough for their families, who also need support and the right pastoral care in order to be able to support them in healing ways.

This is BIGGER than it seems.
written by Miss Leading , April 25, 2010

This entire situation is "touchy"/sensitive. Every justification made for the actions of those boys and the action of the creator of that page on fb, ultimately leads to a very fragile dispute. However, it must be addressed.

FATIMA STUDENT, are you genuinely concerned about the well-being of these boys? Or is your EGO threatening to wreak some sort of havoc in the form of an inferior complex, to which you believe you must insult the writer of this article (and I'm still wondering what you got from that), to prove that Fatima College will need more than a "mere video" to be 'taken down'. SAD!

Before the issue of homosexuality is attended to, let's ALL pay attention to the fact that on more than one occasion, videos and images of students, particularly teens, have been leaked. Whether they have engaged in these acts by force or with willingness, Trinidad and Tobago seems to be threatened by a digital plague that acts as an incurable disease and it needs to - it must, be cured.

In no way do I view this article as an avenue to bash the reputation of Fatima College. Preferably I see it as a method of stressing how important it is to use your brain and to remind the youth (as we do need to be) that there are consequences for your actions. Did you not see the man (the writer of this article) make reference to another school that had a similar situation occur? So where do you get off on making this a personal thing.

Fatima College is one of the most prestigious schools in Trinidad. It's also a school, I presume, with many brilliant young men. Though this unfortunate act threatens the legitimacy of that statement. I stand by it.

So before you play victim and "dare" people to do unnecessary things, please open your mind, see the bigger picture and show us ALL like the Fatima student you claim to be, how celebrated you boys are.

Don't stick your head in the sand. Don't you know it's an ignorant method of self defence?

I must admit that i was not a big shot nor were the friends that i chose... my mother was a cleaner while some of my friends parents were unemployed or a simple seamstress.... but on the other hand i do agree that a lot of matters are covered up an the prestigious schools need to be exposed as well so that there would b a sense of equity as even more nonsense takes place in same sex schools although it may not be equivalent to the mixed schools

what???
written by Anamar , April 25, 2010

Ok why is it that persons insist on displaying such a private scenario on a public social networking site? If you do what you do that's your business but don't make it everyone else's. Secondly, you disgrace your school by wearing your uniforms- same sex or opposite sex. Think before acting...

I personally think the sexual act is not the main issue. The problem is that they conducted with such behaviour in their unifom ON the school compound. They are adolescents, and in my book old enough to make their own decisions. They are fully capable of differentiating betwen right and wrong & clearly made their choice however homosexuality has been prevalent in T&T for years. Its nothing new to society. Every1 is only making it a big issue because it is a prestigious school compounded with the fact that it is same sex.
I went to a same sex prestige girls school & i had no experience with lesbianism throughout my entire seven year period. A school can not make u GAY!! Thats personally ur choice what ur preference is jus dont feel oh so shamed when it comes out because u were foolish enough 2 video tape & take pics of it. The boys should face their consequences for their actions but at the same time for every1 to move as homophobes & haters is clearly not necessary b/c they are embarassed enough as it is.

I question you, are you the one laying with the same sex partner? Really now, leave the children alone. All this talk about "you should go kill yourself" or "I could beat them boi." All these comments on Facebook, why don't you go learn to spell and write properly or go get tested for AIDS? Because I am sure those little children who making up a storm must either have or had a STD,HIV or an unwanted pregnancy. And as for the adults, you too are just as ignorant, I am positive you have made mistakes in your life...the same kinds that make you think "what did i do!?" I've seen comments where people say "God help you" or "you're wrong for being that way"- God created those individuals, the same God who created you. He made them with their ways.People are who they are, leave them let them be when they mean no harm to you.

Think before you speak
written by Danny , April 26, 2010

I am actually ashamed by the comments this event has elicited, especially by supposedly "wise" adults. The real problem here is not same-sex schools; it is the fact that sex education NEEDS to be a priority in our children's curriculum. We "sexualize" our young people daily through different types of media (music = Ramping Shop, and any garbage on MTV/BET) and we expect them, KNOWING they are subject to raging hormones, not to act out? What about co-ed schools in which students have sex in the classrooms after hours? "Bun out de heterosexuals?" Teenagers experiment....this ISN'T new. Thanks to technology, it has been brought to the forefront. I feel sorry for those boys and the stigma they will have to face indefinitely. Hopefully, other people will remain prudent in their actions. It's funny how when a news personality and a Miss Universe candidate are caught in the same type of scandal, it doesn't warrant this kind of backlash. Two boys though? Pressure.

Don't let your disgust for homosexuality cloud how you see the bigger picture. I am not even GOING to comment on the "bun out the chi chi" mentality that PERMEATES Trinidad and Tobago. If you are busy judging the lives of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered and questioning individuals, who is living YOUR life? Study dat.

Peace.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TEL ME WHERE CAN I WATCH THIS VIDEO I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET...

i am not supporting them, but.
written by lezzy , April 27, 2010

it dosen't matter if they have same sex schools or not, point is their are gays out their, and they will do whatever they want to do, beating them or whatever will just make them go into hiding with it, so we need to deal with this very carefully.

how we judge
written by C.Headley , April 27, 2010

i have read what could be a thousand comments on this matter and to me the only wrong acts i could have found was that they did it in school, they were in their uniform and the person who obviously leaked it. we may not agree to their sexual orientation but that does not give us the right to say it was bad or they should be physically harmed. conerning the same sex schools, i have attended girls' school my entire life and i have never had any sexual encounter with a girl. There are gay people every where, in same sex and co-ed schools. Those who blame same sex schools need to do their research properly. I have yet to see two girls kiss but yet we see it in a co-ed school. the way trinidadians are responding to this is very hypocritical in my eyes. we only look to condemn what we do not understand but when we do things wrong we do not like it when the shoe is on the other foot. So before you say anything about them, think that they are people too and i do not think anyone would seriously put themselves in this position if they had a choice.

Respect
written by A.J.U. , April 27, 2010

Im not going to bash them for what they did, but,
They should have had Respected their school but most of all RESPECTED THEM SELVES. Thats so wrong on so many levels.

This is what u get
written by Demisha Johnson , April 27, 2010

This is what you get when human's natural wants and needs are placed in a box and locked. Boys must be around girls and girls must be around boys to learn how to react and interact with each other. It is very important to get accustom to the opposite sex. When God mad us he did not separate us for a reason.

WELL OBVIOUSLY IT SEEMS TO BE . or what about all the other heterosexual things that take place and are covered up or ignored.Let those without sin cast the first stone" i guess u ppl who are commenting are without sin...u ppl are a disgrace...

not sorry for them
written by kdsg , April 27, 2010

I don't care if they were straight or gay.I believe that they are at an age where they should have known better. Why? because they knew DAMN well what they were doing, where they were doing it, what they had on,where they posted it .To top it off even facebook has the option of making your business private and they chose not to do so.So now their business out in the road and people must feel sorry for them...sorry it eh go happen!

Spare a thought
written by Sel Marc , April 28, 2010

I left Fatima College about 9 years ago, I also had the privelege of teaching at said institution for 3 years. I am saddened and disappointed by this unfortunate turn of events as I'm sure most of my schoolmates are as well. But mostly I'm sorry for the boys who still wear the 'grey and khaki'. I can walk about society in relative obscurity but these boys have to deal with a barage of insults and unwarranted villification because of the careless actions of a few. Contrary to popular belief the boys and men of Fatima are not gay, homosexuality was not prevelant at our school, it was NEVER encouraged and and never will be. When we without consideration hurl insults and use this as justification for our hitherto totally implausible accusations we are only doing infinitely more harm than good by now forcing young minds along a path that makes them have to prove there hetherosexuality to society. Let's shelve it. Allow the boys who have exams to focus on their exams and let's open the door to proper discussions to sex education policy in schools.

I'm sorry for them

I dont know wat in d hell made them video that.... But if thats how they are, keep it to themselves, That was a very stupid thing to do, dont let everyone kno.... Oh gosh, its wrong eh and worse yet the whole school being blamed for that... I hope they dealing with this in a proper mature way.

Sad indeed...
written by nitendo vinces , April 28, 2010

I left Fatima, that prestigious institution, 20+ years ago.

I've read the comments posted and my own feelings/opinions lean towards Colin's compassion and Miss Leading's (nice handle btw)urge to remind our youth that their actions bring consequences (good and bad).
To all commentators I say - "Let ye who are without sin cast the first stone".

Don't be too hard on "fatima student" - whether his comment was driven by ego or not. There are few things left in this world that a man can feel proud of, and our alma mater is one such bastion. I share his wounded pride, but I feel confident that Fatima's handling of this matter will be exemplary and set a standard for other institutions to follow when faced with a similar dilemma.

There is an important element that's been left out of the comments thus far - parents and community. I wonder what influence (or absence of) these elements played in these children's lives? What role did they play in formulating the choices made by these two adolescents? Some responsibility has to be laid at the feet of the parents, and the community that helped raise them, for this act.

Why lay all the responsibility on the school? I have no doubt, that schools all over this country are doing everything humanly possible to control students so that they can focus on the prime reason for their attendance - to learn! These schools continue to be plagued with limited resources for delivering an education, especially schools like Fatima who receive a small, meager assistance from our "caring" PNM government. I suppose an investment in P.O.S's skyline will reap greater returns in the future, than in supporting the education system with more than just a "free for all" approach. One insightful commentator called for the school administration to step up, and to take the necessary precautions. I assume that the comment came from an experienced school administrator. Naturally, I was sorely disappointed that they didn't offer a possible solution based on their wealth of experience.
Unless school populations have decreased drastically since I attended, I believe that the faculty is vastly out numbered by the student body. There are 900+ students at Fatima College. It's impossible for the faculty to police every single one. Not to mention, they have more important things to do - like teach!

Parents are their child's first teachers, especially where morals and life values are involved. The sex education being called for needs to be dispensed by fathers to sons and mothers to daughters. They are perfect for delivering a life lesson on a personal and sensitive subject, in a manner it deserves - personal, and with sensitivity.

"It takes a village to raise a child" is a well-known saying. Sadly, Trini culture has evolved away from this such that neighbours, honorary "aunties" and "uncles", are encouraged to mind their own business when it comes to correcting a child's behaviour.

This incident is a peek into what our country has become. This does not just reflect on one school, but on this entire nation. People...take heed.

so wa we gona do about it?
written by Ish , April 30, 2010

This just shows that as we, as a society, change so too do our morals and values. As a student myself, I think more focus should be placed on sexual education. The new stuff like trans and homo should all be discussed. Teens are also in the age where hormones are raging, emotions get in the way, things happen. We are quick to point fingers and place blame. But how does that help us solve out problem?
We need to stop pretending we don't have a problem and realize the influence the outside world has on us, the kids to begin with.
Maybe its time we wake up from our state of apathy or ignorance and find a solution before this matter really gets out of hand.

are we looking in the wrong direction
written by rosemary , June 23, 2010

The innocence of children is easily corrupted. Did anyone stop for a moment to think about if one these boys or individual boy were sexual molested? I guess not. Do you know that father of one of the boys molested two young girls, which went unreported. This information is only known by the girls' families. I wonder if the son was also one of his victims that could have resulted in his behavior at school. Will we ever know. What is our judicial system doing to protect our young ones. Such a sad and distressing time for all.
