Tucked away securely under her pillow is a rosary.
Anna-Marie Lee cannot, no, will not, sleep in her room without the prayer beads hidden beneath her head.
One night late last year, Anna says she was physically attacked – by a spirit.
“I was sleeping and then I felt this presence in the room,” she said. “Something began to choke me and my hands were being pressed across my chest. I couldn’t move and I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t speak. My heart was pounding. I began saying Hail Marys and Our Fathers, but it was only when I said the name ‘Jesus’ that it left.”
This has been the scariest paranormal occurrence this St. Joseph Convent upper-sixer has experienced.
An unexplained, violent shaking of her bed. Friends no one else can see. Shut doors blowing open.
“When I was 6, I had my first encounter,” she said. “It took place at my old primary school. What I saw did not scare me. She looked ordinary, except I had a gut-wrenching feeling that she was no ordinary person, but a person who is not from this world.”
Emily became Anna’s playmate, and although they never spoke to each other, she grew comfortable with the presence of a person only she could see.
“I kept on seeing her, even in my house,” she said. “After a while, I got used to her and I named him Emily, then one day she disappeared. I was young, so I began to think Emily was real. One day, I asked my mom if she knew where Emily was. The first time I asked her, she thought that I was crazy, but I kept asking her about it and then she did some research and then decided that perhaps I had an imaginary friend.”
Although her experiences with the paranormal began to wane as she grew older, she remained preoccupied with it.
“I started doing some research of my own,” she said. “I got into contact with the PRS (Paranormal Research Society). Ryan Buell and his team of investigators have a show on A&E called ‘Paranormal State.’”
Anna believes everyone can tap into the paranormal world and likens it to tuning into a radio station.
She said, “You may have a radio, but you will not hear anything until you turn it on and tune into the right frequency. Everyone is gifted; they just need to learn how to master it. Take time to meditate, sit still and notice the things around you. There is nothing weird about it, it’s just being able to pick up on people’s negative energy and being aware of your surroundings.”
Anna has no problem talking to her friends about her sensitivity to paranormal activity. She says that many of them have also had similar experiences.
She said, “I have shared some things with them, but there are some things that I will not tell anyone. I will keep it to myself and talk to God about it.”
The teen isn’t sure whether her ability is a blessing or a curse.
“I have had some mixed experiences, both good and bad,” she said. “I can tell a lot about someone when I meet them because I can read their energy, but then I have had some places where I couldn’t stand to be because the negative energy was so strong. Then I have had some scary experiences, but I am a really religious person, so I talk to God all the time, especially before I go to sleep at night.”
