match

So you’re wearing a yellow top, one of my favourite colours. What I don’t understand is the yellow shoe, yellow bag, yellow bangles, yellow headband and yellow eyeshadow that you’re wearing as well.

Can anyone explain to me what goes on in the mind of any female who decides to match all their accessories with the colour of the top she’s wearing? I call it “matchy matchy.”

I had girlfriends guilty of this “matchy matchy” madness…had being the operative word here. You know I nip that in the bud early.

Yellow “goes” with so many colours other than yellow, and clearly our offenders are not aware. I’m not a big fan on matching shoes and tops, especially if it’s with bright colours.

How about a brown shoe instead of a yellow one, or maybe bronze if you wanna dress it up a bit? Black is OK also, but only if you’re wearing another piece of black clothing to tie it all in together.

Can you see where I’m going with this?? OK, OK, you can wear a coloured top and shoe that matches, but you might want to keep it simple with the accessories.

So let’s talk accessories: again, I prefer not to match it all to your clothing. You don’t want to overpower the colour of the top (and shoes, if you’re matching them) with accessories; they should be complementary pieces, you know, to add a little bit of your personality to it.

Accessories are really cool pieces guaranteed to make a fashion statement: belts, necklaces (multiple ones look good with simple tops), earrings, hats, handbags (love ’em), even your shoes can be THE focal point in your outfit, and it doesn’t even have to match, in fact nothing has to match, it just has to “go.”

My recommendation for this “MATCHY MATCHY” madness is simple: Your quota for colour is three per outfit. That’s right, three, or the fashion police will issue an immediate warrant for your arrest if you’re caught in public looking like our own local Big Bird. NO BAIL.

TIPS: Brown, beige, tan and bronze are easy colours to wear with yellow. If you’re more on the loud side, you can use blue, orange and purple, even different shades of green. The trick to bright colours is to use them moderately. A little bit will add just enough pizzazz where it’s needed.
