Rompers are so hot, why aren’t stores fired up about them? | Print |

romper_iI walked through Trincity Mall looking in the showcases of various clothing stores, from Bang Bang to Totally U, even Cache, purposely looking for one store with a mannequin dressed in the latest fashion trend.

Noticeably missing from all of the showcases is a trend that's taking a lot longer to dominate the local fashion circuit than I originally expected: Where is the romper?

The romper, "the new and improved jumper," as I call it, is a really simple yet fashionable piece to pull off, a fashion no-brainer. Why am I not seeing much more of this in stores?

This hot summer trend (it is hot) is a stylish fashion-forward comeback from what was originally designed eons ago for children as playwear. That's right; the romper was initially designed for youngsters as "clothes for the park."

Now, we all know what my take on that is, right? Fashion comes full circle. I've said this before.
Designers have again managed to take some hideous-looking thing from the past and successfully revamp it with a little "stitch and cinch" and turn it into a hit on the "runway" and in many ready-to-wear collections.

Are we that far behind, or should I walk the length of all the local malls on an extended hunt for rompers before I start bashing people?

What can I say? Sorry? I'm not.

I'll admit I've seen a "few" rompers, nothing much to chose from, all of them lacking in variety and detail. Geez, where do these people buy their clothes?

The rompers that I've seen (not in stores) all have some sort of cinching involved - some in the waist, whether it be from a draw string or a waist belt (another hot trend), and some a little lower on the hip.

This creates some sort of definition and focal point on the outfit; after all, it's a one-piece, definition is needed somewhere or else we'll be walking around looking like a fridge in that thing.

I love anything that cinches, which is one of the reasons why I actually like the romper. Cinching is great for most body types, and any clothing that helps define or, for some, create a waistline is great for your wardrobe.

I ask again, where are the rompers? Could it be that we're just not feeling this one? Is it too reminiscent of our childhood wear (onesies)? Uh, I don't think so. Then what's the verdict with this one?
