Whilst prowling the Web for cheap weapons of mass destruction, I stumbled upon something that sparked my interest – the very prettyful Palm Pre developed by Palm Inc.

I have been told that this is the new iPhone. So I did my research and studying (I mean, CXC isn’t important, right, after all, I am greatness incarnate.) Let’s look at the characteristics of Palm Pre in terms of user interface, design, Web browsing, multimedia and hardware.

User interface

The Palm Pre tries ever so hard to overpower the iPhone and take the throne as best multimedia cellular phone. Palm Pre uses its own operating system, or OS. The use of touch is highly emphasized here, with innovative gesture controls and animated motions.

It's evident that Palm put a lot of thought into the user interface, as everything seamlessly works together to give you the best user experience and making it a really useful tool in your daily life. It also has something that truly impressed me: multitasking. Now you can send a text whilst organizing your files and changing your music. It's slick, but most importantly, it's easy. So this is something I can see everyone enjoying, from the sophisticated businesspeople who never smile to the casual user who texts people more than they actually call them.

Design

I can only describe it as uber-sweet smexified prettyful-ness. It’s simply gorgeous. It maintains the sophisticated look of an advanced piece of hardware whilst still having a playful yet elegant look to it. First, you've got a multitouch screen that’s absolutely sharp and brilliant in color with its half-VGA (320x480) resolution. It has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, just like the BlackBerry except smaller, yet still as efficient for rapid texting.

When you slide open the Pre, it has a slight curve that makes it comfortable to hold against your cheek when talking on the phone or even when typing out messages. It feels so comfortable, you’ll barely notice it against your ear as you spend hours chatting with that certain someone.

Web browsing

Just like a laptop, all you have to do is search for a wireless network and access it, and there you go, instant Internet access. The browser, from what I’ve seen, is pretty impressive. It quickly renders sites to look as they would on your desktop. So you can be on Facebook wherever you go. Like the iPhone, an app store will be established.

Multimedia is not a problem here. The Palm Pre offers a 3MP camera. However, I’m still not sure about video capture capabilities at this point. I hope that it gets one in late production. Also, the Pre has partnered with Amazon so you can purchase music straight off your Palm Pre.

Hardware

The Pre has integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 (with support for stereo Bluetooth), EV-DO Rev. A and GPS. There’s 8GB of storage, a 3.5mm headphone jack and high-speed USB 2.0. I hear they’re still cramming more stuff in there, so it’s something to look forward to.

The Palm Pre is expected out in late June or mid-July. However, I can promise you this: It will not be cheap. So start saving up so you can get one and show off its greatness to all your iPhone-using chumps. As far as I’m concerned, the Pre is shaping up to be even better than the iPhone.

Erm well I think they offer nothing exceptional over the iPhone. Palm, even though the innovators of the multimedia smart phones, have lost their ground to Apple, RIM, Nokia and a few others. They would have to come much better than this, and at a cheaper price to regain their lost ground.

I think for the Palm to compete with iphone it needs to come up with something new something that will amaze us. If not consider the pre crushed because the iphone app store has amazing games and around 50,000 apps. The iphone not only has apps for entertainment but to help doctors in health care. Why not check out WWDC (world wide developers conference) 2009 to see what the new iphone 3GS has to offer. Apple iphone already sold its 1 billionth app so the pre must do something amazing.
