qrc

Deep in the wild jungle of Port-of-Spain, there exists a wild animal that goes by the name of the QRC man. This species has been around for many years, and like any other wild animal has been continuously fighting for the right to claim the title "king of the jungle."

This extraordinary animal has conquered and ruled in arenas such as politics, sports, literature and the creative arts and has produced many alphas over the course of its existence, including the likes of Eric Williams, Sir Vidia Naipual, Peter Minshall, Richard Thompson, The Honourable George Maxwell Richards and, of course, the one, the only, Mr. Kerry Peters.

Alas, they are not the only animals in the jungle; among them exist other wild, mysterious animals that threaten to take "their title." But what makes this particular breed of animal different from the rest? Observing them in their natural habitat and carefully interacting with them may help answer that question.

The QRC man oozes confidence or maybe just cockiness and walks around with his chest out, as if to say, "I am here, I will rule and you will like me!"

One particular member of the pack, Kyle La Roche, 16, alluded to this by saying, "QRC students possess a greater amount of maturity than other male schools. This is so, because the school develops an individual academically and physically through work and sports — after all, 'All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.' So the school develops all-rounded individuals, who of course stand out from the rest. Apart from all the great achievements of the school, I wanted to attend QRC because of the many successful individuals that the college has produced. QRC is indeed a remarkable educational institution."

Not only does the pack stay true to form, they make sure everyone else knows it. In an effort to keep camaraderie, there is a Facebook group dedicated to the pack's ego that goes by the name of the QRC Royalians ... no, your eyes have not deceived you, they consider themselves the Royalty of Port-of-Spain and beyond.

You would swear they're God's gift to women and the answer to every prayer. But oh, how humble they are about it! On a very related side note, I once had one of these fine, dignified men approach me and explain to me that in all honesty, I could date as many CIC or Fatima men I wanted, but at the end of the day, I was bound to marry a man who came from QRC!

Why? Joel Sadick, 17, explains: "I'm not saying any girl should choose any boy from QRC over another guy, but how we interact with girls are different in comparison to that of CIC, etc. What I'm saying is we have a different way of carrying about ourselves. QRC boys are more on fun and laughs, but when ready, we can be serious and we are confident."

These boys must be applauded, though. From speaking with them, it is clear that not only are they intelligent, sometimes they can be utterly charming. These attributes, however, should not allow them to have an ego the size of a football field.

Maybe that is what sets them apart; maybe that is what allows them to have continuous success and a legacy that is legendary. Whatever it is, or however any one individual may feel about them, it is quite clear that they are here to stay and will continue to make a name for themselves.

Here's an interesting thought that crossed my mind and can possibly be used as, let's say, some food for thought: If the infamous Kanye West had lived and grew up in Trinidad, it is more than likely that QRC is the school he would have attended! Take what you want from that!

In a jungle filled with prying eyes, each move by any member of the pack unveils them. Facing fierce competition, any move made must be strategic and sensible. Making any mistakes with their prey can guarantee a huge setback in their attempt to be known as the ultimate modern day Casanovas.

But the QRC man is not alone, right in the heart of their self-proclaimed owned territory are other hunters anticipating their inevitable downfall. You see, each having their own piece of the jungle is not enough; they must own all of it!

So many packs sharing a territory is a formula for disaster, of which sometimes ensues when one thinks another is encroaching. Why they aren't able to co-operate and form lasting bonds that goes beyond which pack they belong to remains a mystery to their prey.

Maybe they are unaware that to their prey, despite whichever pack they come from they are all one in the same at the end of the day: a typical animal!

(just inspiring discourse) a friend and i were discussing this the other day, at a lime..the fact that QRC men can be spotted from a mile away..are infamous for the eyerolling cockiness...one can interpret as tight fraternal bonds or a great example of pack mentality (not very openminded youth-snowboarding = "babylon ting")..almost like clones..the level of groupthink was quite unnerving, but the brotherhood WAS inspiring! it would have been cool to hear of some comparisons with other schools, is there truly a QRC accent? LOL

Royalian Comment

I find your crass appraisal of the personality disorder of the offspring sprung from the loins of Queens Royal College to be absurd.
A Strong sense of power and ability to achieve is instilled in those who pass through those red gates every weekday morning. It is this same sense of 'I have the ability to change my world' that has created those of notable mention in your same article. Other Secondary institutions could learn a lot from instilling confidence and breeding success in their ranks. While I did have a good hearty laugh at this article, QRC men are taught from day one, 'Certant Omnes Sed Non Omnibus Palman' All must strive but the prize is not for all. In other words, GO out and strive for what you want, even though you may not achieve it. It means STAND in the face of adversity rather than cower beside it! That is what makes QRC men different and yes, that is a feeling to be shared by those who care to hear or not.

Your very article hasn't really proven anything. You provided very little verifiable data to 'prove' anything, your interviews with 'random' QRC students is not nearly conclusive. To be honest, you sound like someone who has a particular bone to pick with a certain QRC boy, and are taking it out on the entire school. I have no real problem with your article, gave me and the guys a good laugh. But there's something to be learned from teaching children to have a higher than normal sense of self worth.

Either way, nothing personal, I enjoyed the article for its entertainment value.

lol

The R in QRC stands for Royal... hence "Royalians"... duhhh
CIC boys aren't "Saints" because they're perfect... :s

Anyway I'm glad our greatness, real or perceived, has given you content... Why not write about the humility of another boy school? lol not very interesting is it...

oops, was I cocky?

I have no bone to pick with any QRC man...I have friends who attend QRC and this article was written for entertainment purposes and it's smth that comes up all the time "the questions of the qrc cockiness" ....i don't need verifyable data for an article of opinion...i'll tell you what my article proved...it proved that I'm a good writer than really knows how to get a rise out of people

Bluebloods Rule
written by FB Blueblood , January 20, 2011

I don't see the article as an affront or attack on us QRC "bluebloods." Rather, I see it merely as a proclamation of things we who went there already know. I live abroad, and have two young sons. I fully intend to return to Trini one day so my boys can have a chance to go to QRC, where friends who were in school with me are now teachers etc. there. The legacy is real and deep. We look out for each other regardless of age, class, race, location, or status. QRC doesn't prepare teach students just to pass exams; rather, it "educates." Hence the reason some many Qs are in places of power, reason, and authority. We expect to lead and that's what we are taught.

Not bad at all!
written by True Blue , January 21, 2011

I agree with the sentiments expressed by FB Bluebood. It does speak to who or in your case "what" we are, although there is still a bit more to us than what was written. But you have done your homework! Lol! We do consider ourselves a breed apart and I would advance that this is a fact recognized, if not acknowledged, by the wider society. True to form, we also make no apology for this for what would life be like without those who attempt to dare and make a difference? I give you an A for effort! We can still flesh out some more of the content...Lol!

Not Enough Said
written by Robert Mayers , February 24, 2011

The piece was too short. She needed to have a few more paragraphs of just the names alone such as Rudranath Capildeo, Sir Hugh Oliver Beresford Wooding, Lloyd Best and Reginald Dumas; just to name a few more. Also I would hardly have used Kanye West as an example of an "interesting thought." If I had to write over that part,it would go like this: "As an interesting thought, if the greatest Caribbean leader to ever walk the face of Planet Earth, Sir Frank Worrell, had lived and grown up in Trinidad, he would have had no other choice but to attend QRC."

Accurate...notice this
written by Rolloz , June 18, 2011

Only the boys who attend QRC or know QRC people are throwing a fit. QRC is a school just like the rest of them and a person would be no different if they were to go to another prestigious school over QRC, for example, I know two brothers who graduated from QRC a couple years back, they live abroad now. One is a lawyer and the other is a cashier in a supermarket. Same school, different lives. At the end of the day all that 'who school better' and 'who have the best gyals/fellas' is a bunch of poppycock. QRC boys could talk all they want bout how nice they think they are but the rest of us know it really. Doh. Matter.
